Digital Dental Impressions and their Benefits

Digital Impression System

Digital Dental impressions, or computer-generated mouth-tissue replicas created using lasers or other optical scanning devices, are becoming increasingly commonplace, with dentists using them to accurately capture impression data much more quickly than they would by conventional methods. Digital impression systems remove any need for using messy impression materials like conventional plaster models and make for a much more comfortable patient experience.

There are 2 methods of capturing digital impressions. Doctors may either use digital photographs in order to scan dentures, or try to use a digital video. Sometimes, the dentist will coat the patient’s teeth with a special titanium dioxide dust before the actual scanning procedure. The information that is collected with the digital scan is transferred to a computer for restoration purposes, and can typically be viewed on a monitor as and when it is captured.

Advantages of taking digital dental impressions

There are a number of advantages for using this technology. Digital impression systems are not only very productive and efficient but highly accurate as well. The ability to email dental impressions rather than having to send them by courier or mail makes them extremely convenient for dentists. Same-day dental restorations rely on such technologies, which remove the need for the patient to visit the dentist multiple times.

The added benefits of using digital impressions

Restorations get to be very precise due to the improved impression quality. Since there is no use of conventional impression-taking materials, errors on that front can be effectively eliminated.

Since the process only takes 3-5 minutes to complete, the chair time for patients is almost negligible.

People who have strong gag reflexes, or are otherwise afraid or anxious about dental treatment will find the procedure of taking digital impressions much more pleasant compared to traditional methods.

Since a digital impression can simply be stored in a computer, there is no need for any paperwork or physical storage space.

Since disposable trays and other medical impression materials that would otherwise be dumped at some landfill aren’t being used at all, digital impressions are also eco-friendly alternatives to traditional methods.

As there is no need to spend any extra time making a traditional cast because the digital file can simply be emailed to the lab, the entire process becomes much faster.

The dentist is able to magnify and evaluate a digital impression even while the patient is seated in front of him, which lets him immediately correct any errors before forwarding it to the lab. The ability to view it on-screen also allows him to diagnose the dental issues and even modify preps for surgery if required.
